Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a naturally occuring component found in your horses soft connective tissue and joint fluid.  It is the most important substance repsonsible for joint lubrication.  As the horse ages, it produces less HA and the viscosity of the joint fluid decreases and is unable to cushion the joint cartilate, leading to the increased war on the cartilage surfaces of the joint.  As a result of this, joints become stiff and movement becomes painful.  HA supplementation will restore the normal viscosity and increase the mobility of the joint.
